A rare and beautiful cobble of white jade

High quality cobbles of jade found in and around the White Jade River in Hetian are increasingly rare. When they are unearthed they are either snapped up by master carvers or find their way to auction. This cobble was recently sold at auction for a little more than $40,000, which works out at about $140 a gram. One of the factors which made it so valuable was the colour of the skin or rind of the stone. It is described in Chinese as Autumn Pear, which roughly translates as Russet.

…………and before anyone asks, this is not the fabled mutton fat white jade, which everyone talks about. Cobbles of that jade are on quite another level. Learn more about jade at www.jadefiend.com
