Mjollnir, hammer of Thor, God of Thunder
A lot of commercial carvers stick to a few tried and trusted designs for their bread and butter income. In New Zealand that might be a Tiki or a Fish Hook. In China it might be a Laughing Buddha or Guanyin. I have a few popular designs which sell well but I am always trying out new ideas or giving old ideas fresh impetus. It takes time and a lot of trial and error which the customer never sees. I can spend a month working out a new design and then no-one wants to buy it. On the other hand they can fly off the shelves like hotcakes. Most carvings go through several versions before they are ready. Choosing an affordable jade fine enough for the detail with a good enough colour that can take a reasonable polish are the main problems. I went a little crazy when I decided to work on Mjollnir, Hammer of Thor, God of Thunder. Fortunately, they were all a success. I have one or two left but have moved on to other designs now.
