An exquisite carving
I came across this carving at a workshop at the Temple of the Stone Buddha in Henan recently. The craftsman has used a piece of the increasingly rare porcelain jade to fashion this scene of a horse grazing in the snow. There is a level of skill involved far beyond my own capabilities. I always admire artists who can see the design within a stone and draw it out, in contrast to most of us who impose our own ideas on the jade we work with. I have a piece of this porcelain jade, which is a mixture of clearly defined white and black nephrite within the same stone, but so far haven’t had the nerve to carve it.
