There is no accounting for taste
I recently posted about a jade clock that was to be auctioned in Hong Kong. It was one of two pieces of jade, one from the Qing Dynasty and the other from the Ming Dynasty, that had been transformed into timepieces by Cartier in the 1920s. I stated quite clearly that I thought the addition of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, pearls, and gold to already beautiful pieces of jade was vulgar. Not everyone who read my post agreed, although most did.
These jade clocks were snapped by eager buyers at the weekend. The one I posted about went for five times its estimate, at about $400,000 USD. The other piece, a water clock, fetched nearly ten times its estimate, at more than $2,000,000 USD. Go figure. Each to his own. Learn more about jade HERE
